Everyday multiculturalism

Today in the phone store the salesperson was quite openly wondering how I could have a Romanian ID, when my skin is so _light_ (exact words). Because in her experience, Romanians have darker skin. And then she quickly added that it is true that they (Turkish) are also different: it depends if they come from the Eastern or Western part of the country. I was so confused for a second, that I could only mumble something among the lines that I am definitely a Caucasian.

Ma a telefonboltban egészen nyíltan rám csodálkozott az eladó, hogy mégis hogy van nekem román személyim, amikor olyan _világos_ (idéztem) a bőröm. Mert ő azt tapasztalja, hogy a románok inkább sötétebb bőrűek. Aztán gyorsan hozzátette, hogy igaz ugyan, hogy náluk, törököknél is van különbség aszerint, hogy a keleti vagy nyugati országrészből származnak. Hirtelen zavaromban csak annyit tudtam kinyögni, hogy ami biztos, hogy kaukázusi vagyok.
